¿Really, John?... ¿Really?

McEnroe stated just before this year's Australian Open Final that his favorite to win it was Andy Murray. I know hindsight is 20/20 but the lack of expertise to measure up the quality of tennis Roger is playing it's quite simply astonishing. I too showed a similar ignorance when I inisinuated Del Potro couldn't bring anything into play to try to stop Roger in the previous US Open, but even in the thunderous mist of triumphs that blinded us, tennis fans, last year, Roger's game was not as precise as what we were able and privileged to see today and the previous week. Search the two last games of today's final (Federer break of Murray's serve to go 5-3 and the way he closed the set 6-3) and watch the three balls he put into the corners. Or the passing he made to go 0-40 when they were 1-1 on the second set. I haven't seen that kind of shoots since, I don't know, maybe since one Roger Federer out played Andy Roddick in 2006 US Open Final or maybe that previous year US Open final against Andre Agassi... and both ended in four sets.

Update:
Coming off a loss to Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open final, more than a few thought Federer had little chance of winning in Melbourne. Case in point: None of the six ESPN.com tennis "experts" picked Federer to win. (What do we know?)
